Goals
South Orange Historical and Preservation Society (SOHPS) was formed in 1986. The goal of the organization is to further the study of the history and architecture of the Village of South Orange, New Jersey.
We strive to:
~ Provide programs to disseminate historical, preservation and architectural information.
~ Support preservation activities within the Village of South Orange.
~ Support the recognition of landmark buildings and historic neighborhoods.
~ Promote adaptive reuse of significant historic structures rather than abandonment or demolition.

In Memorium
John Overall was a founding member of our Society, its Historian and Emeritus board member. For his encyclopedic knowledge, we called him “The Unofficial Historian of South Orange.” John died March 28, 2024.
Mary Kay Mitchell was a founding member of our Society and was active in obtaining the NJ and National historic designations for the Old Stone House. Mary Kay died Aug 2, 2021
Rita Miller was a long-time member and friend of our Society. She died at age 92 on June 16, 2022.
